Postdoctoral Research Associate in Neurodegenerative Disease

The Sydney Pharmacy School is a globally recognized leader in pharmacy research and education. Our researchers work on cutting-edge projects, from molecules to medicines, patient care to policy, across multiple therapeutic areas.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A or B) to join the lab led by Professor Adam Walker. The research focuses on molecular, biochemical, cellular, and animal model studies to understand the causes and develop treatments for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)/Motor Neuron Disease (MND) and Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD).

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in neurological disease models.
  • Develop and refine independent research skills under supervision.
  • Maintain high-quality research standards and excellence.
  • Mentor students and junior researchers where appropriate.
  • Utilize advanced research techniques, including:
    • Biochemistry
    • Cell culture and molecular biology (e.g., gene editing, CRISPR, transcriptomics, proteomics)
    • Advanced microscopy and imaging
    • Use of mouse models for disease studies
    • Pre-clinical drug testing (AAVs, behavioral analysis, surgeries)
    • Analysis of human tissue samples
  • Assist with project design, grant applications, and biosafety/ethics approvals.
  • Publish high-impact research findings in top scientific journals.

About You (Selection Criteria)

Essential:

  • PhD in cell biology, biochemistry, neuropharmacology, or neuroscience.
  • Expertise in either mouse models of neurological disease or molecular and cellular neuroscience.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Research background in ALS and FTD.
  • High-profile first-author publications.
  • Proven record of success in competitive funding applications.
  • Experience presenting research at international conferences.

  • The successful candidate will be based at the Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus.
